Goodyear Rides on Microsoft Teams to Keep Plants Running

As one of the largest tire manufactures in the world, Goodyear was not going to let pandemic travel restrictions slow them down.

Rubber met the road when engineers could no longer travel to factories for equipment installation or troubleshooting. Goodyear turned to Microsoft Teams running on RealWear assisted-reality wearable computers to bring the engineering experts into the plants virtually.

With a “two heads are better than one” approach, Goodyear improved collaboration by enabling more people to participate in troubleshooting problems. Using RealWear and Teams, multiple engineers can now help an onsite associate resolve an issue. Troubleshooting can start immediately via Teams, without the delays and costs associated with days of travel.

Founded in 1898, Goodyear is one of the world’s largest tire companies, with 62,000 associates and 46 facilities around the world.  The company depends on more than 2,500 engineers to keep its complex production processes running optimally. When these engineers could no longer travel to factories for equipment installation or troubleshooting, Goodyear turned to Microsoft Teams running on RealWear assisted-reality wearable computers to bring the engineering experts into the plants virtually. “Instead of sending an engineer to a local factory, we use the Microsoft Teams and RealWear solutions to collaborate remotely and instantaneously,” says David Westfall, IT Department Manager at Goodyear. “Not only do we reduce our dependency on travel, but we can provide solutions faster.” Since deploying the voice-controlled devices, Goodyear has found that they’re frequently in use.
